if you can't get to the docs for a while take an anti-histamine - may help ease the symptoms that are driving you mad!0

As others have said, there are lots of things that can cause itchiness, and I'd definitely get yourself to the doctors and they will probably give you an antihistamine. You could try one of the over the counter brands like Piriton but if it's anything like the 'itches' I get, it won't even touch it. My prescription antihistamine is 300x stronger than Piriton :rotfl:
A good way to relieve itching is to either take a lukewarm bath in Oilatum, which has a soothing effect on the skin, or the more moneysaving way is to put some porrige oats into the foot of a pair of tights and then knot them. Use it as you would a sponge, the white creamy stuff that comes out is a naturally soothing substance (I think it's the natural version of what they use in oilatum and similar).
Hope you get it sorted soon.

Thanks for all your replies.

Finally managed to get to the Drs yesterday, which was tricky because the soles of my feet were very swollen and sore and my thigh muscles had seized up. I was up all night on Sunday scratching like mad, and my face looked like i'd gone 10 rounds with Tyson! :eek:I could have cried when the receptionist just took my number and sent me home...they're like Rottweilers at our practice, the way they protect those Drs from the great unwashed!
The Dr phoned and said that it was an allergic reaction to Zyban, which i've been taking for 2 weeks and prescribed some steroids. Looked at the advice slip that comes with them, and it says that some antibiotics i'm taking interfere with the steroids...you'd think that he would have checked my file before prescribing them, especially as he was diagnosing me over the phone! :mad: So i have to stop taking everything, and go up to the surgery in the morning. The swelling's mostly gone down (my head got so fat that i couldn't wear my glasses...i tried to perch them on my nose, but they kept falling off while i was watching Corrie :rotfl:) but i'm still itching like mad. I remember my mum telling me that i was really good when i caught chicken pox as a kid, and hardly scratched at all...if she could see me now, i'd be getting my hand slapped every 5 seconds!
I'm housesitting at the MILs at the mo, and she's got some Oliatum, i'm going to have a nice warm soak in that soon. She also got some temazapam, so i'm going to make sure that i get at least one good nights sleep tonight! I was nearly crying on Sunday night, i was that fed up with it!
I'm supposed to be moving house on Sunday as well, but i think i'm going to have to put that back a bit. I can't grip a door handle, never mind pack and lift boxes! These things always happen at the most convenient times, don't they?! :rolleyes: It's the first time i've ever had an allergic reaction to anything...and hopefully the last!
And i'm still gasping for a ciggarette! :mad::rolleyes::D0 -
Aw Intastella I hope you get it sorted. Definitely get into the oilatum, keep the bath quite cool though as heat will make the itching worse.
It took the doctors ages to get mine sorted (it's 'ideopathic' which basically means they don't actually know why it's happening, there's no outside cause) and so it's just controled with strong AH's. I had the same as you happening though with swollen hands, feet, face, it's really quite debilitiating but when people ask whats wrong and you say "I'm itchy," you sound like an idiot!

HI im glad you got it sorted. Thinking about what you said i had an allergic reaction 2 years ago when i was on holiday. I thought it was heat rash but i didnt realise the medication i was on shouldnt be mixed with headache tablets. So i know how you felt, i thought my whole body was on fire literally. Especially my palms and heels of my feet and like you they swelled up really bad and it was the 2nd day into my holiday and i was in tears.0

There are some leaflets that are not particularly great and are written more to cover the company than to inform patients. Steroids and antibiotics are used together frequently and I don't think I've ever come across a problem combining the two.0
