Itch Scratch Itch...

I don't know what on earth is wrong with me today, i just can't stop scratching! My hands, head, feet and the small of my back are driving me mental  My hands are now really swollen...a ring that i took off easily yesterday now won't budge. I have lumps on my head and the small of my back, i don't know if they're causing the itch, or they've come up coz i can't stop raking at my skin. I've not changed washing powder or anything like that, absolutely nothing is different from my usual routine. I've had it since i woke up this morning...in fact, i think i half remember scratching like mad on the palms of my hands in my sleep...they were very tender on the heel when i got up. What could possibly be causing it?? I don't even have any calamine lotion...can anybody recommend something to cool and soothe my skin a bit? I tried a bit of coconut oil but it didn't make any difference :(

There are a lot of conditions that can cause itchyness, if you can't get an appointment with your GP then go to the pharmacist and ask advice.

NHS direct or go straight to your nearest pharmasist who will be able to suggest something- sounds like a reaction to something...
  • I'd say try to really thoroughly think through everything you did yesterday. Did you do anything in the garden? Visit anywhere different? eat or drink anything different? It is surprising that when you sit down and think you might identify some little change. Also though sometimes you find that a favourite washing powder or skin cream has changed - did you start a new packet of anything?

But like the others say, you need to see a pharmacist or your GP to deal with this asap

Definitely worth a trip to your GP as it could be anything. If you haven't experienced this kind of thing before it might be some form of bite that's irritated your skin.

I would suggest Sudocrem, which is good for any kind of itchyness! You can slather on as much as you like and it's really soothing.

Sometimes new medication can cause this (have you taken any over the counter remedies?)
  • Hi, you must go to the doctor to get this looked into, however just mention scabies as my doctor missed this, (she told me to change my washing powder, get a new matress etc, none of which helped). I looked into it on the net and stumbuled upon scabies and it fitted exactly what I was going through, went back to the doctor (well the nurse actually and she said yes straight away) It drove me insane (the itching is terrible) along with several other family members (contagious!) and it took a while to get rid of it! Please get it checked out!

I feel like this too when i get hot. I put mine down to a combination of the heating going on and dry skin. Its that time of year when were all covering up and our bodies arnt getting any air to them. It felt like a prickly heat and one second my legs itched, then my arms, then my back etc, etc. I only seem to get in when a get too warm (maybe its my age) lol. So i just started using lots of moisturisers and having cooler showers rather than steaming hot baths, as this is when it felt at its worse. Just to add maybe try using after sun or aloe vera as its soothing cooling moisturiser and also wear cotton clothing so that your body can breathe.
