I am sure that your definition and mine of 'best' would vary wildly, but if you want to be in the busiest place in terms of bars/clubs/nightlife etc then head to Kuta.
There is a wealth of information on the Trip Advisor Bali forum.
If you are looking for a busy nightlife and good beaches then I should think that there are far more options closer to home, Thailand for example.0 -
Hey thanks for your help....but its Bali we fancy going to...so was just looking for some info....:j0

The 'resorts' in Bali tend to just be a collection of hotels with a few hotel bars and restaurants thrown into the mix. As stated, the only really busy town is Kuta. Loads of bars, clubs, shops, restaurants, markets etc, but not the prettiest town. It has a huge beach which is good for surfing, but not really for swimming due to the waves, and again, it's not the prettiest beach. Loads of Aussies and backpackers and not particularly upmarket (no offence to Aussies or backpackers!:D)

I spent a couple of weeks in Kuta last year and was continually hassled by street vendors. The beach isn't very good either, all the shops sell the same tourist trinkets.
On a night time if you sit outside in the open air restaurants on the main road which runs through Kuta keep your eyes peeled, there are huge rats all over the place scurrying along the walls and the sides of the road.
One day (daytime) we were sat in one of the beach bars waiting for a drink and looked towards the bar area where there were five large rats running backwards and forwards over the glasses which were stacked on the shelves behind the bar. I pointed them out to the bar staff who just shrugged their shoulders. I would never go there again. Although if you travel inland the scenery is breathtaking.
But if I were you I would avoid Kuta.0 -
I went last Christmas and felt that Kuta is very developed with nightmarish traffic jam or "macet" in local parlance. Would suggest Legian which is a little further up north. Nice black volcanic sands beach.
There are plenty of street and beach vendors who can be very persistent so be polite, stand your ground and say no or just don't engage. A smile and an eye contact can be construed as a " yes, I am open for business"
Stay in the resort you like best and if anything, hire a local driver to drive you around.0 -
Malaysia Airlines sale now on0

Would say Sanur would be your best bet. Not as busy as Kuta but much nicer beach.0

We stayed in Sanur and it has the advantage of being within walking distance of local bars and restaurants. We met people who were staying in posh places in Nusa Dua which is a secluded complex isolated from the locals. Sanur was also a bit more informal as some hotels are quite posh. We don't like dressing up on holiday as I am a natural scruff. did not go to Kuta but have been told that it is quite built up with lots of bars and restaurants.0

Been looking at Sanur and think thats where i am going to opt for.... But i was shocked when i phoned Hayes and Jarvis !!! i asked about a 2night stop-over in either Singapore or KL and the girl quoted me an extra £1400 !!! claiming.... oh!! the flights alone are comin in at £1100 each !!!
I though stop overs were meant to be quite cheap ??? am i wrong ??? or does anyone know where i could book my holiday or who i could book it with for a stopover ????
Thanks0 -
If you wish to book a package then you could try the likes of Kuoni, Virgin, Travelbag, Travelmood etc.
Check the likes of Kayak or Opodo for the best days to fly (with regards to pricing) and cross reference this with the sale dates on Malaysia Airlines website if you wish to stopover in KL. You should then be in a better position to know exactly the dates to ask the TA/TO to check if you book a package.
Alternatively you could go DIY and look at the prices with Air Asia to KL ex Stansted and the cheap onward connections from there.
I recently spent a fortnight in Bali, with 10 nights in Sanur and picked Sanur precisely because it was not busy. You may do well to further research Legian (as previously suggested) or Seminyak as with their proximity to Kuta for the nightlife either may suit you better than Sanur?0
