BT landline customer in need of new broadband

Hi guys,

I would love it if you could give me some advice.

I currently have a BT landline and broadband with BeUnlimited. I have been assured I have good broadband speeds as I live in a big city.

My internet is fine when I attach a cable between the box and my laptop, but the wireless - which I want - is pants. It drops out all the time even if I am only 15 feet approx away from it. This is a real pain. Be themselves were surprised when I called them about it. I only had half strength on the wireless and I was sitting next to the box. They sent me a new router but I now have the same old problems.

I am fed up now and I think I want to move away from Be. I would like as close to unlimited usage as possible. Any suggestions where I should go? I thought about BT - going to a trusted company etc - but they seem pricey.

Thanks in advance

It may be a problem with your laptop.

Does you laptop work fine when connected by wi-fi elsewhere? e.g a public location?

If you move away from a good ISP like Be then you'll be shooting yourself in the foot most likely.

Your problems are with the wireless and not with the ISP and that is outside of their control.

As you live in a city a good starting point would be to check to see if other WiFi networks are visible to you and if so change the channel.

I don't know. How would I find this out?

I will try and go to some places with wifi and have a wee go

Presumably when you signed your contract with your ISP you had an expectation of speeds "up to" xx which they will have advertised

    https://www.bethere.co.uk/web/beportal/homepage

Various options appear to be listed here so you know what you are paying for, then you need to run a speedtest to see what you are getting.

All of this I feel however is irrelevant to your wireless issue

    Check your potential linespeed here:
    http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/adslchecker.welcome
Then check your actual linespeed here first using ethernet and then using wireless:
    www.speedtest.net.
Post the results and then proper advice can be given. However, it seems pretty clear that your wireless connection is the problem, and probably at the laptop end, rather than the router, since that has already been exchanged. Blaming Be for your woes is unjustified.
Then the first thing to do is log into your router interface and change the wireless channel.
PS: curious as to why you would think BT is a 'trusted company'?

Wireless routers are very prone to interference, with most you can go into the control panel and change the channel it transmits on, had to do it with mine 'cos one of the security cameras kept knocking it out, been fine since.
Woofles you need to get out of that house. You are going insane:eek: - colinw

apologises for spelling mistakes - google toolbar and I have had a hissy fit and I've lost me spell checker.
