Hi all,
I just looked at my account today and noticed that my bank has charge me £100 becasue they made direct debits payment when I had no money in my account. Can they do this it as it seem a lot of money to me ? so insterad my accoutn being -40 its not -140

Yes they can do it.0

Do you actually mean £100 of bank charges, or simply that DDs to the sum of £100 have been paid?
Yes they can do this.
Would you prefer the alternative, that your DDs bounce? Your bills won't get paid (with any possible consequence that that entails) and your bank would certainly charge you for that too.
It's your responsibility to manage your account, ie to ensure you have sufficient funds to cover your DDs or to cancel them if not.0 -
It was bank charge of £25 quid for each DD so £100 in total. And I usally have a perfect account but due to the postal strike, I have not got letters that have cheques in for me so have been able to pay them into my account. So I dont see why I should be fined becasue of this and if they look at my account they will see that ever month I have enought money in and I pay cheques in every month.
Seem like I am being penalised becasue of the Royal Mail.....Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

Very dramatic ! The bank is not penalising you, just passing on a charge that you should know about from their Tariff or Terms & Conditions. They cannot be expected to know of the reason for the shortfall on your account.
I suggest you pay the cheques in, keep details of them, then write to your branch explaining and ask if they would consider a refund in view of your usual good management of the account. A refund would be at their discretion, so don't p**s them off in your letter!
Good luck
