Setting up a Cab office!

Do anyone have indepth info of what it takes to set up such company.

    When dealing with the CSA its important to note that it is commonly accepted as unfit for purpose, and by default this also means the staff are unfit for purpose.

    I was thinking earlier that although I don't have anything very helpful to say on this subject, something would be better than nothing ...

    AFAIK, you would have to be registered with the local authority, so contacting them might be the place to start. It's not a trivial matter: again AFAIK all your drivers will need a CRB check, you will certainly have to satisfy yourself that they are who they say they are, and that their driving licences are in order. Whether you're supplying vehicles or expecting your drivers to do so, they will have to be kept in tip-top condition. Then you'll need radios, and licences for that. Premises to operate from - secure premises, with a decent screen between operator and Joe Public if Joe Public can walk in and ask for a cab. A safe for banking the money until you can get to the bank. A robust system for keeping tabs on hours worked, jobs done, takings due. And so on.

    Not an easy way to make money, whichever way you look at it ...

    Most cab drivers are self employed, it's the local authority that insists on CRB checks , you don't need to get it done just check the paperwork the council issues. Again although the radio company may own some cars, the self employed drivers own there own, it's up to them to keep them in good condition. Most of the time there's not going to be loads of cash in the office, the drivers are paid, the drivers keep it, once a week they'll come in to pay for their radios. It's up to the Council to confirm the drivers are who they claim to be, if they come into your office with a badge, then rent them a radio.
    The thing you need to do is a get an operators licence from your council, buy a load of radios. and sort out some sort of licence to broadcast, similar to a tv licence. Oh and premises of course but as work comes mainly off the phonr you may decide on something tucked away that the public don't have access to.

    Insurance. I wouldn't like to see the bill for the Public Liability each year, let alone the rest.

    If you work inside the office controlling then it's essential that you are incredibly rude and grumpy. If you are not then you must find someone that can be. :o

    But up to whoever's renting the radios out to them to make sure they DO keep them in good condition, surely?

    Here in Scotland all taxis are inspected once a year by the cab licence people to ensure their vehicles are in good working order.

    In terms of being clean and tidy perhaps when drivers want to rent a radio from you they have to sign some sort of agreement. Perhaps that could contain a clause on keeping vehicles clean and tidy! Another clause could be about keeping themselves smart and presentable.

    I know someone who has 200 drivers and charges them £80 per week for the radios.He said most taxi firms are struggling and a lot of drivers are working 18 hours a day 7 days a week just to make ends meet.

    Lets hope the OP doesnt set up in the same area as the person you know!

    Try working as a taxi driver as yourself for 6 months so you can get a better idea of things.
