Is Freesat available abroad (Iceland)

Hi,
Im looking to relocate overseas for a while in particular Iceland!
Trying to make this a home away from home as best I can and so want/need to be able to view British tv, something similar to Sky+ functionality will be just fine.....
Apparently Sky tv was available in Iceland a little while ago and was very expensive, it seems these days that option is no longer available.
Does anybody know where I can find out info as to wether freesat is available overseas, I would be willing to fork out on a Humax HD PVR for the priveledge (if it will work of course!)
Anyone tried and tested freesat overseas and with success? even better anyone with tips on watching uk tv in Iceland for free?!!!
Cheers
Darren

Right, first thing to say is what you are really interested in is if you can receive the signal from the Astra 2 cluster of saterlites in Iceland (forget freesat/sky for the moment). This is what carries the channels that are received on Sky/Freesat in the UK. A number of these channels are Free to Air and if the beam from the saterlite can be received in Iceland then you will be able to watch them with an appropriate dish and receiver.
Astra 2 is primarely focused at UK/Eire however it can be received in other countries usually with a bigger dish being required (sometimes up to 2m).
So what you need to do is establish if anyone is receiving it in Iceland and what setup they have. I suggest a forum like DigitalSpy may be a better place as it is full of people receiving saterlite from all over europe.
Good luck.0 -
Are you still going to have an address or location that has broadband in the UK?
If you can say yes to that, there is a solution you could use.
1 - buy a slingbox
2 - buy your freesat box
3 - hook them all up together, and set up the slingbox for remote access
4 - watch your slingbox, and dedicated freesat box wherever you are in the world with an internet connection
I have one, and it's great for when i'm holed up in a hotel for work, or want to catch a bit of british news when on holiday. For you, it would give you all the channels you want, without having to have a huge dish if are only renting a place in Iceland0 -
markymoo has a good idea but more expensive maybe as you need to buy the equipment and pay for internet in both places
If Sky was available and came from the same satellite as it does here you should be able to pick up freesat channels fine, but might need a bigger dish as mentioned. Do you know someone living in Iceland atm who you can ask? Or try an expat forum or maybe even email a dish installer in Iceland and check what channels are available.
Also if you like US Shows you might be able to get them their too0 -
So Icelandic TV is not that great then?
Should be lots of programs on fishing and surviving financial meltdown at least. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Thanks for the replies,
Some interesting thoughts especially markymoo's and the slingshot idea, I will be getting broadband out there and I will also be keeping it running in the Uk so that could be an option.
Sky Tv was available a little while ago in Iceland and from what I have heard was very very expensive.
Will have to do some research...
Cheers guys0
