Salary Increase, Have I Blundered?

I have been within my current position for over one year and I have been pushing hard to secure the full salary for this position, when I initially took on the job I was given a pay-rise and since then I have received another token increase.

However this falls well short of what my contemporaries within the company are receiving as well as those within my own department. I have been told I will have to complete assessments before I can secure a pay-rise, however these assessments don't and have never existed despite promises that they would be put in place.

I have asked my manager to bring my salary into line with my contemporaries within the company, I have a proven track record within my position and I am continually outperforming most others as reflected via the bonuses I have been making.

I am convinced this will sour my relationship with my superiors within the company and I know I will not receive a salary rise, did I make the wrong move and what are my options?

Thanks in advance

Not sure if it would be the same in the company you work for, but in a previous employer, people's pay would often be different based on the length of time a person had worked in the company. There would be a minimum and maximum salary for the pay bracket and someone who had been there for say a year might be in the middle while someone who had been there for 10 would be on the maximum, even though they were doing the exact same work.
  • If that was the case then there would be a problem with the Company now as it would potentially be age discrimination!

So all civil service and NHS work don't work on that basis Jazzyman01?

It's not age discrimination because a 18 year old and a 53 year old who started on the same day would get the same amount
  • No - not what I said. Said potential discrimination because there are always variables. If the company is paying different amounts based on length of service this would potentially be discrimination.

Exactly. Age discrimination doesn't come into it. It's all to do with length of service.

Indeed the job I was referring to was with in the civil service.
  • OP, go and ask you manager what you need to do/achieve/accomplish in order to secure a payrise.

How on earth did you come to that conclusion?

Employee A: 30 years old and been with company 10 years
Employee B: 45 years old and been with company 3 years

    No it wouldn't.
Remember, everyone thinks they are better at their job than their fellow employees.
It's the managers/employers decision what they think someone is worth based on MANY criteria.

    Debt-free and Proud!
I get what they where trying to say, I got taken on for a job at the same time as someone who was about 56, im 26, and they got paid £4k a year more then me to do the same role, even though we had exactly the same experience. Because of age discrimination you are not supposed to be able to do this if both people have the same experience because the length of the expereince should not come in to it as this could be counted as age discrimination, or something like that!
Debt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.

I have to complete assessments that do not currently exist, however they have been in the pipeline for almost two years now.
