Career Change - Teaching

Hi,

My Wife is looking at a career change. She is a qualified hair stylist with 20+yrs experience. She is thinking of a teaching career (English or History). She knows she needs to do an Access course for Higher Education and then 3 yrs at Uni, plus 1 yr Post Graduate teaching certificate course.

What she is not sure of is what grants/help is available to help her achieve this.

Does anyone have experience of doing this or can give any further advice?

Many Thanks

If you search this forum you'll find loads of threads with good advice.

For the 3 undergraduate years she'll be eligible for student loan, and for the PGCE year she'll be eligible for bursary plus loans, the bursary amount will depend on which age group she teaches and which subject. The other option open to her is to do a four year BEd degree with QTS.
  • TDA website. I'm not even sure how much the training bursary is. But I believe it has dropped to £4k for history or english. You can also obtain a maintenance grants if you qualify.

As far as the Access course goes, if your wife hasn't got an NVQ3 in hairdressing (or anything else) she could be eligible for the Adult Learning Grant of £30 per week; if she's under 25 then her fees for this would be free as well.

If she goes to a traditional university she will be funded by student loans and grants if on a low household. Full information on https://www.direct.gov.uk Alternatively she could do her Englis/Hhistory degree with the OU whilst carrying on working. If your household income is low she would get her fees paid for this or, if not eligible, she could spread the fees across the year. Courses will start in February.

In addition to the qualifications you mention, she'll also need a GCSE grade A-C (or equivalent) in English and Maths, with Science as well if she wants to teach primary.
  • TeddyRuxpin! Back in the day. Sorry OP, no advice for you, just started reminiscing when I saw the user name.
