Downlights

I'm after some downlights for our soon to be started new kitchen. The finished room will be 4.7m x 3.5m. I was thinking of having 8 downlights in total in there, and downgrade the 50W bulbs to 35W if it's too bright. Would 8 be sufficient do you think? Hoping to get some Exergi LED bulbs gradually to replace the halogens as they fail. Thought maybe having two bulbs equally spaced across the width, then one in the centre, then two, then one and then another two at the other end, all equally spaced off the ceiling's centre line. Any opinions on this configuration? And do they have to be fire rated as they're going in the kitchen?

*placed this in the wrong forum!!! Can someone place it in the "In my home" forum please*

Probably not enough. I have 7 x 35w downlights in my bathroom and my that's only 2.5m x 1.8m. Don't find it too bright at all.

Thanks. Lots of people are telling me to avoid downlights at all cost. And recommending I get some designer fluorescent lights instead.

i, I have just bought ten fire rated downlighters from screfix for around £90, I have also ordered led lights directly from the manufacturer in China at a cost of £7 each delivered. As you are putting the lights in the ceiling with a room above they must be fire rated and have an area 100mm around them free of insulation etc. 8 doesnt sound many for the area with 35w bulbs, but I suppose is borderline, possibly better to go for another two or four and then change them to LED or low energy and cut your costs dramatically.
  • ;) Ordered 12 low energy fire rated downlighters last night!! Going to have four rows of three across the ceiling. Thinking of maybe asking the sparkie if he can wire up each row of four lights separate so we can pick and choose which lights we have on when.

I got these globalds, from that site.

http://www.lightsaver.co.uk/shop/index.php Might have been able to find them cheaper elsewhere, but I need them pretty sharpish and choosing lights was beginning to wear me down so just opted for them in the end.
