New job P45

Hi,

I start my new job on the 2nd November.I have been on JSA for a few weeks.

My new employer has sent a letter/called asking for a p45 now do I take along the one from my previous employers from a few weeks back or wait around for weeks/months/years for the jobcentre to send me one? and get emergency taxed?

anyone else been in the same situation?

Thanks for your time

There is more threads about this here which will give you plenty of advice.

Try using the search facility, you should be able to find them.
When dealing with the CSA its important to note that it is commonly accepted as unfit for purpose, and by default this also means the staff are unfit for purpose.

They'll need an up to date P45, so you should wait for one from the jobcentre and in the meantime you can fill in a P46 so that you aren't emergency taxed.

I'm in a similar situation - I was made redundant on 31st August, and started a new job on Sept 29th. I've been chasing up my P45, and was finally informed this morning that it had been sent out today (they have two months to get it done it, and they pick the day of the postal strike ). My new employer has therefore asked that I fill in a P46 instead, so I shouldn't be emergency taxed, although the chances are that my income will vary over the next couple of months (then again, I'll be filling in my tax return, so that'll happen anyway ;))

    Hope this helps!

You should have handed in the P45 from your old job to the jobcentre. In order for the correct tax to be deducted three figures are needed, a tax code, your total taxable earnings to date, and the total tax you have paid to date. If you give your new employer the P45 from your old employer the taxable earnings figure, and the tax paid figure will not include any jobseekers you have been paid or any tax rebate the jobcentre may make. This will result in you underpaying tax in your new employment which will later have to be paid.
If you get your P45 from the jobcentre before you start working (unlikely) hand that in though it is likely it will be an emergency code on it. If you do not have the P45 then ask for a P46 and assuming that this is your only job and you do not get any pension then put an X in box B sign and date it. Your employer will then put you on the emergency code on a week1/month1 basis. This code usually results in you paying about the right amount of tax unless you have an unusual tax code. If you do pay to much or to little tax it will be adjusted later when the tax office advise your employer of you code, taxable pay and tax paid.
