American Airlines - refund policy

Hi all
I'm just writing on the off chance after reading a thread today. I had booked a flight to NY with AA, due to fly next week. In August, I cancelled my flight as I was going for the marathon and wasn't able to take part anymore.
Anyway, at the time, I emailled AA asking for the airport taxes to be refunded (non refundable ticket). I received the following email:
"To whom it may concern:
I am sorry, but we do not refund taxes paid on a nonrefundable ticket.
I am sorry my answer could not have been more favorable.
Pat Reeves/ca"
I just let things be assuming that this was just their policy. But threads here suggest that I may be entitled to a refund of the airport taxes (subject to any charges they may impose, which I'm aware may wipe out the refund anyway).
Has anyone else had to cancel a flight with AA and get taxes back, have I been fobbed off? Is this worth pursuing?
Thanks

this is from the AA website...but not sure it makes the situation any clearer
Upon request taxes and charges not imposed by the airline may be refunded if the airline's obligation to remit the tax or charge depends upon use of the ticket for travel. Taxes and charges will not be refunded if the airline's obligation to remit the tax or charge arises from the collection of the tax or charge. All taxes and charges imposed by the United States government fall within this category and are not refundable.0
