    On the one hand it seems you have a choice to switch, but on the other it didn't. Hence my questions.

    As you have an A&L current account, you don't appear to be able to open the Abbey one:
    You cannot take advantage of this offer if you currently hold any Abbey, Alliance & Leicester, cahoot or Cater Allen current account, or have held one in the past three months.

    That is referring to the £100 cashback offer for the Preferred Overdraft Rate Bank Account .

    To get the 6% Preferred In Credit Rate Bank Account you do not even need to use the switching service. There are no exclusions for applicants to this account.

    Yes, not switching only appears to exclude the £100 cashback and 0% overdraft for the first 4 months.
