moving out of rented flat - utilities question

I am moving into a new rented flat on October 30th. My contract on my current flat doesn't end until 10th Nov - new letting agent called and offered to halve the admin fee if I could move in at the end of this month, so i said yes.

I need to contact the water company, electric company and council to tell them I am moving.

I have 2 questions...

1) I assume I just need to send a bog standard letter telling them I am vacating the property on x date?

2) Should I say I'm moving out on the 30th Oct or 10th Nov? I will not be staying overnight in my current flat after 30th Oct but I will be in and out, packing stuff and moving.

Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Utilities will want readings on the day you move plus your new address to forward final bills. Best to call them really, much quicker than snail mail!

For council tax, we just gave them a call and told them the date we will be in our new place - the council tax band was the same so they simply changed the address on our records and our payments were then for the new property. That was the easy bit.

Now broadband and telephone lines, on the other hand........try to do that in advance because it took me ages to get them to transfer those properly!

What date are you giving the keys back to the LL or agent?
If you are paying rent til the 10th Nov, & not handing keys back til then, you are still responsible for the bills until that date.
Write to the council (some will accept an email) & tell them the date you are moving. You could try to get them to calculate the 10 days the place will be vacant (but if you are living alone & already have 25% off you may find this reduces to 10%!)
Call the utilities on the day you hand the keys back & tell them you are moving out & give them your new address & the meter readings. Take a picture of the readings for your records.
