Thanks for taking the time to provide all the positive feedback - it's really appreciated. Great to hear of a Londoner loving it too ;)

Having lived in the South all my life I have no idea why I'm being "pulled" to Northumberland but sometimes you have to go with the flow. Maybe it's my mid-life crisis :) Anyway, I'm going up for 2 days next Thursday/Friday to meet the developer and discuss some options and spend a bit of time in the area.

You'll love it! I'm from Somerset and moved to Northumberland earlier this year and it's one of the best kept secrets when it comes to beautiful countryside and scenery! Takes a while to get used to the northern accents though :D

If you like reading, make sure you visit Barter Books in the old railway station at Alnwick!!

    We're off to Beadnell on Saturday for a week!! :j :j :j

Only our second visit so can't claim any real in-depth local knowledge but as others have said the coast and inland countryside are fabulous - and there's a Castle around almost every corner.

There's a B road from Alnwick to Otterburn (for Keilder) via Rothbury which we thought was a particularly stunning drive.

Good luck if you decide to relocate, don't think you'll be short of visitors!
  • I used to live in a village about 7 miles away, Alnwick is a pretty historic town.

I'd move back in heart beat if there was work.

Great country side, near the coast and moors, it even has a newly opened sainsburys.

For a good night out you are going to have to travel, i.e newcastle but have had some good nights in Alnwick.

Newcastle is about 40 min, Alnmouth Station is about 4 miles away.

Lot of tourists in summer and parking can be fun.

That said I love the place, and the surrounding area

I grew up in Northumberland, and after I've graduated will be moving back there with my fiancé to start family life :) I couldn't imagine myself living anywhere else. It's a beautiful county, I would recommend Morpeth, its a gorgeous little market town where I spent most of my childhood.

Yes I would recommend Morpeth also. Alnwick may find you a little bit too far out of your nearest big city. I am 42, a Geordie living in Perthshire in Scotland. I moved here from Newcastle 6 years ago and love it but I do sometimes wish I was a bit closer to to the city ( although never again in it ). I have just sold my house and think I am probably seeking the same mix as you but just in Scotland. Morpeth, Hexham and Corbridge as well as Wylam and Riding Mill I think are great rural communities which offer a great mix of just far enough outside but not too far. Also try Rowlands Gill or Whickham to get even nearer but still maintaining the country feel. My parents lived in Swarland (just outside Alnwick) for a few years and they are in their 70's - need I say more?

I've just found that 2km away from where I'm thinking, a 10 turbine wind farm was granted on appeal a few months back! !!!!!! :(
