Alnwick, Northumberland - anyone familiar?

Hi Guys,
After 18 months renting and a plot of land falling through yesterday I am seriously thinking of having an adventure and moving from the Dorset coast to near Alnwick by the spectacular Northumberland coast.
So... before I get too carried away does anyone have experience of living up there and would you recommend it?
Just to help... I'm a young 46 and would be going with one girlfriend and one dog. My job is based at home and just required broadband, I do like the hustle and bustle of towns occasionally but prefer the peace of the rural countryside so as long as I can get to some action in a 20 min taxi ride (pubs/restaurants) I'll be happy anywhere.
So, what say the educated and wise on here?

I am from Northumberland originally so might be biased but it was a great place to grow up and live. I don't know Alnwick very well but if you are prepared to consider locations further inland i would highly recommend Hexham, Corbridge and around the Tyne Valley. Friendly people, some good country pubs and if you want better shopping and nightlife Newcastle is about 30 minutes away.0

I don't live there but have rented holiday accomodation there a fair bit ad just this last weekend was there for a wedding, stayed in Corbridge (Angel Inn, highly recommended), Shopped in Hexham.
So I second the thought, lovely area, cast your net a little wider than just alnwick, certainly include Hexham, and Corbridge.
Hexham has a large shiny new hospital just built. and a really friendly music shop I rented some gear from at short notice too.

Cheers again. I've actually seen a property I am interested in just North of Alnwick near Ellingham.0 -
I live in Northumberland and I love it. I've lived all over the country and I came back here because I haven't found anywhere else where the quality of life or beauty or people match up.
You'll love the people, the views, the lifestyle. If I could choose to live anywhere in the UK, I would choose here or the Scottish Borders.
Places like Chillingham, Chatton etc are stunning and really close to the A1 for travelling.I'll have some cheese please, bob.0 -
Just noticed you mentioned Ellingham - that's similar to the places I gave above. Beautiful! I wish I could work from home and live more rurally.
PS: Also noticed you just mentioned nightlife.... Newcastle is much more than half an hour away, about double on a good traffic day. Morpeth is an okay night out though, and closer :-)I'll have some cheese please, bob.0 -

Ooh..now you have me all excited
Thanks for the feedback - it's what these forums are so good for!0 -
I live not far away and echo the positive comments, though I do agree that it's a bit longer than 30 mins to Newcastle from North Alnwick.0

I'm a Londoner who chooses to live in the North East - I really couldn't live anywhere else now!
Alnwick is lovely but so are Morpeth, Hexham, Rothbury etc. (I would kill to live in Rothbury!) but all within easy reach of the fantastic nightlife doon the toon.
I wish you all the best in your new life up here!0 -
I like the area too. Hope you find what you are looking for.The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett
