Dreadful nails

Hi all,
Can anyone recommend any products to help my dreadful nails, they've always been terrible but now they are dreadful, think it's prob because I've been washing my hands a lot more since the swineflu outbreak.
They are weak, bendy, split and look dry.
I take a normal multivitamin so is it worth buying (expensive:eek:) vitamins specifically for nails and hair? Do they have a magic ingredient or something?
Also any recommendations for products you paint onto your nails - Opi nail Envy gets good reviews but is painfully pricey!

Hi Avstar
I had the same problem a while ago - but my nails were in a state after having tried acrylic nails! I used a nail strengthener from Rimmel. I can't remember what it was called exactly but it was a clear nail varnish and it was for strengthening/rescuing nails and cost a couple of pounnds. You have to put it on daily but after a while i found my nails were in much better condition!
I also tried Sally Hansen nail strengthener from boots which was good but costs about £6 and i found it no better than the rimmel one.
Hope that helps

Thanks BrucieBonus, I'll have a look in Boots for the Rimmel one, going at lunchtime.0

If you wanted to try the Opi Nail Envy, you can get mini ones from ebay for a couple of quid.0

I have soft nails that split easily. Ive tried different products and the one that has made a really noticeable difference is Vaseline Healthy Hand and Nail conditioning. I really recommend it.

My nails no longer split at all and they are lovely and smooth. Ive never seen my nails look so nice and use it at least once a day.
Before I went on holiday I used it on my toe nails a few weeks before I went and it had a noticeable difference on those too.0 -
PS It comes in a 200ml bottle but you can also get it in a small tube if you just want a small one to try.0

You don't need to spend a lot to get your nails looking good. A normal multi vitamin should be fine. You need to moisturise your hands nails and cuticles, and olive oil is better than hand cream for this! Either use it as a hand cream, or warm it and soak your nails in it to harden them.
That should improve the condition of your nails, if you want to grow them I have found that Sally Hansen's maximum growth is about the best treatment. I tried a few different treatments and stuff when i was growing my nails for my wedding but this was the best, it genuinely helps them grow more quickly but seals and protects them at the same time.0 -
Thanks everyone, gonna buy the Vaseline hand cream (thanks beachbeth) to leave at work as I can't really use olive oil at work.
I'll use the olive oil at home ta KatP (plus also use it wearing cotton gloves while I'm asleep).
I've just been to Boots and bought Sally Hanson miracle cure as it had good reviews online and they were going it buy one get one half price.
BUT, can't work out how to use it, it says paint on nails but do I remove the old miracle cure first or keep painting over?:o0 -
My nails went all minging and disgusting while I was pregnant (breaking and full of ridges) I found that holland and barrets skin, hair and nails tablets worked a treat.
There normally on special, pills are a bit huge and taste funky but they work!!0 -
Im going to contridict everything now!! Whoops!
Am I the only person that finds soft nails break less? I have long natural nails that are really strong but i find that the first time i walllop something (or someone ;0P) or catch my hand somewhere (car door struggling with my daughter and a ton of shopping mostly ;0P) they break right off. Ive found that if i give them a buffing, and soak them in almond oil (nom!) they soften up and are more resilient to damage - they bend instead of break if they take a knock!
Even if i'm on my own here, if nothing else, the above can serve as a handy tip if you want softer toenails I guess!0
