0870 app has finally appeared on the iTunes App Store

I posted this on the freebies forum last night, there appears to be little attention paid to it there so thought it more convenient to post it here. Thought there might be more interest in this here as it’s more a techie device type thing.

0870, a fantastic free iPhone app from freelance mobile developer Simon Maddox is at last available in the UK App Store.

Essentially, 0870 makes it a lot cheaper for iPhone users to call the 08 numbers that a lot of organisations use as one way to generate revenue off their call centres. It costs more to call an 08 number than it does to call a geographic landline number, so understandably, there has been consumer backlash in the form of SayNoTo0870 – a website that collects landline alternatives to 08 numbers.

The 0870 app searches this database for the 08 number you’re trying to call, and if it finds an alternative landline number, you’re given the option to call it from directly within the app, using the allowance you’ve already paid for.

I couldn’t find this app on the UK app store; if you do have more info on this app can you please post it below.

Edit from Simon Maddox' website: the 0870 app is under “Tools”. Or just search for “0870”.

Some of you may already know that the same app has been available for Android for a while now.

Apparently the Android version of 0870 works a lot nicer than the iPhone app, since Android gives you the ability to hook into the native applications already on the device.

Yeah but it takes you straight to iTunes home page and not straight to any 0870 related page. There appears to be nothing showing even when you search 0870 and as I’ve said I can’t find this app on the UK app store.

I guess it would be better to look under tools or just search for 0870 on your phone.

i've just gone into itunes, gone into the store, made sure i'm on the UK store, in the search box i've typed 0870, and it comes up.

Just downloaded it, a search for 0870 found it without any problem and it downloaded first time.

No it's taking me to their home page. No worries, as long as everyone else are managing to download this onto their phone then that's all that matters as far as I'm concerned.

It would be great though if some of you could post your experiences of this as I, and I'm sure others, would like to know if there are any pros & cons using this app. I can’t imaging that there could be any faults with this but as it’s quite new I suppose there are bound to be some problematic issues. And if people could maybe compare this with Android too then that would be great also.

I just downloaded this, went to the App store on my phone, searched 0870 and it was the first result
