Transferring files etc onto new laptop

Options
Hi,

I have a new laptop arriving today-is there an easy way to transfer docs/itunes library/internet favourites etc from my existing laptop?

I have an external hard drive but it is not up to date with all my stuff.

Thanks

  • Oh, I also have an offer for a "free" upgrade to windows 7 if I transfer all my stuff will I have to start again after loading windows 7 when it arrives?

  • Can't answer your query moneysavingwannabe but also considering same thing i.e. buying Vista laptop now but if going with upgrade to Windows 7 what will it involve and can someone who isn't too high on computer techie skill do it?
If only I could stop finding good bargains on this site, I would save a fortune! :rotfl:
  • Morning,

If you have an external hard drive then you can simply copy your files from the old machine and put them onto the new one.

Most of the upgrade disks being supplied will do the job with very little input from the user making them ideal for those who don't know to much about comps.

  • Hi,
I have 65gb of stuff on my laptop so thinking it may take a while although I suppose some of it will be programs?

Also have 80gb or so on itunes on my hard drive I was thinking of putting all this on my laptop as has 500gb hard drive on new laptop. Need to find out how to export my library as last time it took hours to scan all the music and add to laptop

So will windows 7 just load and not affect docs etc or is it best to back everything up just in case??

  • Always make sure you back up anyway before you do absolutely anything. In the past when moving iTune I simply copy the iTunes folder in My Documents\My Music over to the new machine \ external hard drive.

An upgrade to the operating system should not remove any programs if you run it over the top. You might find that some of your programs might not work with Windows 7 though. Also make sure that you have up to date drivers for all peripherals (printers etc). Windows Update after the upgrade should do the job.

Remember to back up though before running the upgrade. Good Luck!!

  • Thanks everyone from me - feel more conifdent at updating with 'free' upgrade at later stage. (will need to get our external harddrive beforehand tho!)

Nope, just make sure you backup all your data to the external disk.
