Transcription

Hi all
Not sure if this is in the right place but i'm about to start transcribing a recording of a disciplinary hearing for my OH and not sure what sort of format it should be in.
Do I write the person's name then write what is said? What happens when they start interupting and talking over each other how do I record that?
I would be grateful for any suggestions.
Thanks all!!

I'd start at the top with:
    Date: .....
    Present: ....

DISCIPLINARY HEARING: [Name of the person]

    ... then start typing.

It is normal where interruptions to occur to indicate this in some way, probably the best thing to do is type everything up, indicating where there were interruptions. By the time you get to the end, you'll have formed a feeling/opinion of how many times these occurred and the best way to deal with them. One way is to put [interrupted...] and then the other person's words on the next line, then when the 1st one starts again, to start a new line.

There are a number of formats for this really and it can be quite complex to get spot on if you've not done it before.

So, best advice I can give is: type everything entirely, then start with a copy of that and go through filtering it out. That way you have the whole transcript to refer back to (and in case anybody expected the full set) - and - the readable version.

Some organisations don't want any interruptions to be shown, just for the whole thing to be tidied up so it is easily readable.

Another tip is: in your original transcription, at handy moments, I'd make a note of how far along the tape had gone, so it would be easy to go back and clarify parts at any time, this is for your benefit only and would be removed from the final version of course.

Thanks for your speedy response PasturesNew, I think this organisation would like for the interuptions to be tidied up however I think they will help evidence that the hearing was unfair and ultimate decision was predetermined.
Cheers my dear!! Best get typing!!
