Phone warranty without proof of purchase, phone was released less than 12months ago f

My mobile phone has recently started to play up but I don’t have the original proof of purchase as I got if off ebay two months ago second hand. It has been fine up till now. It’s the Sony Ericson c905 which was realised on the 22nd October 2008 so it must still be under warranty. I have emailed the seller asking if he has the original proof of purchase but I’m not holding my breath. In the Sony Ericson conditions for the warranty it days that you must provide the original proof of purchase for it to be valid under the warranty which seems understandable so that they can seen when it was bought and thus if it is still under warranty but it seems unfair if they refuse to repair my phone as it must be within its 12 months. I’m not sure if it’s me being angry as I might have wasted my money on a bad deal but I want to see if other people think I have a strong foot to stand on when I approach Sony.

It may be the case that the warranty is only available to the original purchaser of the phone, which you patently are not. I don't think you have a leg to stand on, to be honest, never mind a foot.
  • usually POP is still required as you may have bought the handset abroad where they are usually released earlier, and also being in a different country to the handsets origin means that particular repair centre are not responsible for the warranty. so in short, you need POP unless you get the original seller to get a copy of the receipt by asking for one for insurance purposes. then give them some money for their trouble. All i can think of.
    Back by no demand whatsoever.
  • You may be in luck. Afaik some repair centres use the IMEI and date code that is printed inside sony ericsson handsets rather than proof of purchase to verify warranty status.

You could try taking your handset into carphone warehouse or phones4u as they both offer repair services, or emailing sony ericsson and asking for the details of your nearest authorised repair centres.
  • Indeed. I won an HP PDA in a competition once (hence no proof of purchase!) and it gave up after about 6 months. But they replaced it free of charge as the serial number told them how old the unit was.
  • Try the network. Virgin will replace their handsets no matter where they were purchased. They just check the IMEI. No sure if your network will do the same, but it's worth a try
