Job fair

It's my first time going to a job fair. All I know about job fairs is employers trying to promote their company, networking, and stuff like that.

I was wondering about the following:
  • dress code - smart casual, casual, or formal?
  • what to take?
  • would employers have vacancies advertised on the day?
  • what to questions to ask?

I would say dress as if you were going to an interview - first impressions count - one day one of those guys could be your boss. I'd take copies of your CV, blank/note paper and a pen, but can't think of anything else.
I've never been to one so guessing!

Looks like I need to wear a suit then...

Since you said take copies of my CV, I assume they will be advertising vacancies?

I couldn't tell you but it helps in case they do! Or at least if you get talking to someone you could leave a CV with the speculatively. It's better than not taking it I would say!
  • I think it varies from company to company. Some will genuinely be looking to recuit on the day (or at least invite to interview). Some will just want to meet prospective employees, promote their company and direct you to their website (or other method of applying).

Definitely take your CV and dress as if for an interview. The more CVs you leave with people, the better chance of getting a job :)

The recruiters might ask you questions that are similar to those you would get in an interview, so I would also make sure you have prepared what you will say.

The job fair is organised by a local newspaper company, and it's advertised in that newspaper and by the Job Centre.
  • I got my job (in a supermarket) after going to a jobs fair.

IIRC, each employer has a little presentation area. You can go to each one and tell them what work you are looking for and they tell you what they're looking for. If you are interested they'll probably give you an application form.

I took CV's with me and I did show them to a few employers but they didn't keep it, although a recruitment agency did. The employers are more likely to give out application forms/packs which you can complete at home. I took home about 6!

I think you should dress smartly but not overly so (if that makes sense).

    Good luck!

I went to one once. I
    • Wore a suit
    • Gave CVs to anyone that would have them
    • Tempted as I was, did not have a beer until I was just about ready to leave
    • Grabbed bags and bags of freebies :D

As mentioned above the only response I got was from agencies (who probably had my details anyway).

One of the more intriguing stands was for MI6. They have a web site too. I thought they only sidled up to you at Oxford or Cambridge or was that the other side? Anyway, if you feel you could live the James Bond lifestyle it could be worth a go!
