Decorating cakes.

Anyone know where the cheapest places to buy cake decorating stuff is? Looking for things like piping nozzles, edible glitter/sparkles and cake boards (or can I just cover some cardboard with tin foil?).

Also when it comes to cake tins am I better off paying for expnsive ones that will last forever or are the cheap ones just as good?

One last question- how far in advance can you make a birthday cake. I was thinking the day before to give it time to cool then ice.

  • It depends on the recipe you use. A good madeira cake can be made upto a week in advance. Make sure you wrap the cooled cake ASAP in clingfilm, then ice when ready. I made hubby a birthday cake on Monday that was eaten today and it was still lovely and moist.
Smashed through my weightloss target. Looking at 120lbs+ loss. BMI over 40 down to 20.5. Training hard to get body fat under 20%, not far to go now :j

You can cover cardboard with foil but make sure it will take the weight of the cake. Often a wooden board is better. Cover with a couple of layers of foil then cling film it. :) Cake boards and boxes in larger quantities: http://www.ryepac.co.uk

I get sprinkles and sugar paste from ebay and my last set of icing nozzles came from amazon. With cake tins, I find it depends on what you are doing. TKMaxx often has some lovely ones for far cheaper than they normally would be.

  • Thanks everyone, checked ebay and amazon and got a nice starter set from amazon and managed to borrow my future MIL's baking tins but if the cakes go well I might get some nice quality ones with pound a day challenge money.

Have some really heavy duty carboard that my cat food arrives in and it should hold the weight (I tested by putting my kitten on it and lifting and it held his weight np!!) and found some clear sticky back plastic in b+q for under a pound as well so going to cover board with his birthday paper and then the plastic.

Fingers crossed it goes well otherwise it will be a mad dash to asda on Sunday to get him a new birthday cake.
  • If you're still looking, Asda does pretty good cake boards for about 70p and Iceland is doing a big box contains four different types of sprinkles for £1- similar sets are £2.50 elsewhere. Morrisons has some icing funnels for bout 70p aswell as lots of cheap cookie cutters.

    Good luck!!
