Entitled to break?

Just wondering if anyone knows that if you only work 4 hours - are you entitled to break.

Just started my 1st job and i was standing for 4 hours with no break. No one told me if i was entitled to one and i didnt want to ask either. So it gets tiring serving people and no drink or anything so does anyone know what my rights are?

Thanks in advance.

You are only entitled to a break once you have worked 6 hrs.

  • Hi. If you check out this website, you'll see that you're not entitled to a break. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Employment/Employees/WorkingHoursAndTimeOff/DG_10029451

'Rest breaks - a break during your working day

If you are an adult worker (that is, over 18), you will normally have the right to a 20 minute rest break if you are expected to work for more than six hours at a stretch.
A lunch or coffee break can count as your rest break. Additional breaks might be given by your contract of employment. There is no statutory right to 'smoking breaks'.
    The requirements are:

    • the break must be in one block
    • it cannot be taken off one end of the working day - it must be somewhere in the middle
    • you are allowed to spend it away from the place on your employer's premises where you work
    • your employer can say when the break must be taken, as long as it meets these conditions'.
"I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they're right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together." OK, assuming that you're a young adult, then i'm going to be a bit brutal and say that you should be able to cope with 4 hours work without whinging and demanding rights.

Welcome to the real world, the grown up adult world where you have to actually work quite hard to earn your money. And in most instances work very hard, for a lot less money than you would like.

If you find yourself tired after 4 hours shop/cafe/resturant work, and you are over 14 years of age, then basically, get out there, pull your socks up, get up earlier, have a proper breakfast and stick a bit of dynamite up your backside.

if you're anything more than 14-16, then i completely dispair

Sorry to be rude, and frank, it's not like me. But !!!!!!!!

If you are working on a computer you're allowed a 5 minute screen break for every hour of work. That doesn't mean 5 minutes doing nowt however, it simply means 5 minutes doing something which doesn't involve staring at a screen.

and to whoever was rude - there was no need to be - i was only asking, it only required a yes or no answer..as all i said it can get a bit tiring and..yes i was up since 5am...walked to the place of work which was far and then got thrown in at the deep end with no training or help....other people simply said no - there was no need for it - and yes im not dumb - and know what hardwork is and how people get little money for a lot of work! so everyone is trying to better their future and not go through the same! anyways....i sed my bit.

I take at least 2 breaks when at work, 1 in the morning around 11 30 when i have a drink and have a rest and then my lunch, i tend to have a break when everyone else has 1 so i wont get moaned at for taking a break
  • the guy that came in after you and got a break may have been doing a longer shift so he might have been entitled to one, but unluckily for you it has to be 6 hours to get a break

why dont you ask, ok so you may not legally be allowed to a break but they may let you take 5 mins to get a drink of water,
