Autumn Winter clothes for unstylish SAHM

I had a big clear out of my wardrobe over the summer and threw out a lot of clothes with holes stains etc, now I have the following to start again with:

Tops: 2 jumpers, a couple of hoodies and a few summer cardigans. I have a few vest tops but are only good enough to wear underneath jumpers. I have a few T-shirts which are OK.

Trousers: I have one pair of jeans that fit me and are high enough on the waist to cover my tummy.

I am fed up with always wearing either a hoodie and jeans or T-shirt and jeans.

I am a size 10 on top and 12 bottom and quite self conscious about my bum/hip area (although I am told it's not as bad as I think), My tummy area is the bit I would most like to hide, It's just a bit flabby from pregnancy and only really bad when sitting down I get a bit of a roll. I'm pretty short 5'2" with blonde hair and pale cool skintone.

I have very limited funds so I am really looking for a capsule wardrobe of sorts but I don't do trousers or shirts (or ironing).

I have some clubcard vouchers so might double up to spend in Tesco or DH might authorise £50ish as a one off so could probably get some bits in Primark.

I as thinking about skinny jeans or leggings as an alternative to bootcut jeans but not sure what to wear on my feet.

Any tips or suggestions? What should my capsule/mix and match wardrobe consist of?

All items must be suitable for sitting on the floor and chasing after a toddler in!

I'd invest in some comfortable flat boots in either dark brown or black that will look great with jeans AND dresses/skirts plus they'll be practical for your lifestyle.

Shirt dresses are a staple in my wardrobe for winter as I can layer under and over them, and they can be worn with leggings/skinny jeans weather permitting.

A long line cardigan (primark have an amazing selection) is versatile and practical

If your self concious about your stomach I think longer, and looser tops are the way to go. Shirt dresses/tunics..things along that line.

    :o

Tesco are good for the kind of clothes I've described as are Primark and New Look often has some promotions..they have gorgeous jumper dresses for £12 right now that would be warm, comfortable, stylish and practical with leggings and boots.

Hope that helps, at least a little.

Asda have some fab leather riding-type boots in dark brown & black, they are £35 but they would be really versatile.

Also, try to keep to a few colours to coordinate with what you have - things always look smarter when they are coordinated or complimentary in shades ;) For example, I have dark blue jeans that look great with grey jumpers & black boots, or creamy beige jumpers & brown boots.

Or wear accent colours to "lift" your outfit & make you feel brighter - again as an example: dark blue jeans, blue cardie plus pink / lemon / aqua / lilac long-sleeved t-shirt (couple of £ from Primark, wash really well, and come either plain colours or stripey).

You could always try layering a short sleeved v-neck or low-cut T-shirt over a plain white long sleeved one.....using your summer T's yet keeping a bit covered up over winter. In fact, the Primark ones are quite long, and the TV programmes always say to "disguise a tummy, have a bit of white T-shirt showing underneath your top".

    Hope that helps,

OK so I think flat boots are probably a must. I'd also really like a long cardi or maybe two.

Some long sleeve T- shirts would be good too but need to think about colours carefully to coordinate with what I have.

I'll check out the jumper dresses in NL too.

One thing that worries me about leggings and skinny jeans is how stupid will they look when I have to take my shoes off, like at soft play and round people's houses?
  • I've seen lots of young girls in skinny jeans and leggings with those ballet slipper things. I think that looks pretty cute.

Make sure you have some funky socks on, with no holes ;) Asda are doing 4 pairs for £3, lots of fancy patterns & colours.
  • To be honest, no one is going to care what you do/dont have on your feet when your at a place like that.
Bright/funky socks will be just fine, or even plain socks.

I've been shopping at Tesco and got some great bits:

One pair of jeggings (jeans/leggings) they are great as are less bulky than skinny jeans so more slimming and fit better under boots. Also come up a bit higher on the waist so I don't feel like they are falling down, and hold my tummy in a bit.

Some flat slouchy grey boots £12 (only pleather but look good)

A red long loose tshirt top with side pockets

A thin long cardi in grey with roll up button detail on the sleeves.

A chunky grey/black specky long cardi

A black/white stripe long batwing slouchy knit top

I love how it all mix and matches and how much slimmer I look in it all.

Thank you for all your sugestions. I think I just need a few more long vest tops, another pair of skinny jeans or leggings and maybe another pair of boots, but they can wait until Xmas. Oooh some accessories would be ovely too...

Sounds like so great buys, jeggings are so versatile and the boots sound fab. I have some grey pleather boots from Primark from a few years ago that are still going strong, I rarely buy "expensive" (over £20) shoes!
I really love the sound of everything you got,
I'm smiling as I read your post.
