Holidays in notice period

Hi
I have handed in my notice on Friday and have to give 4 weeks statutory notice. However I have 11 days accrued holiday. HR have said they don't have to let me take them in the notice period and it is at their discretion to either make me work the full time, or pay me in lieu of holiday time.
Is this right?

Absolutely correct. This will be the discretion of the company. I suggest you take the holiday or leave early - company permitting.Motto: 'If you don't ask, you don't get!!'

You are still their employee during the notice period. As an employee they could have refused a holiday before you resigned so they can continue to do so after you have resigned. The only exception would be if you were within four weeks of the end of the holiday year and you had not taken all of your statutory (as different from company) paid holiday for the year.
Actually HR should have said they could either require you to work all of the notice period and pay you in lieu of holiday or allow you to take holiday.0
