I am about to become self employed. I currently work for my dad and when self employed I will still on occasion be working for him and billing him for my time. What I am trying to find out is how my days a month I am aloud to work for my dad and still be classed as self employed???
Thanks!!!
Thanks!!!

You are saying you will be doing work for a client who happens to be your dad. That family relationship does not matter.
What matters is what matters regarding the relationship with any other client.
Will you have other clients or will your dad's business be the only client?
Will the work you do for your dad be the same sort of work as you are currently doing for him? If so, would someone else doing it be able to do so on a self-employed basis? (That is would they meet the tests about autonomy and so on?)0 -
If HMRC saw that the amounts paid to you by your father's business were roughly the same, and were paid at regular intervals, they might wonder why you were being treated as self employed. It is not really acceptable for someone to become self employed just so the employer does not have to operate PAYE.
So as mentioned, will you be operating like a genuine sole trader? Invoicing is good, but will you have several clients and not have a regular commitment to your father?Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

Yes the work would be the same as normal and again yes I would have other clients I would not be working for my dad full time again.
I want to still be able to work for my dad so not to leave him without the help and also to be able to have my own clients and eventually it would be all work for other clients as my dad is thinking of retirement.
But for the time being I would be working for him a couple of days a week and then have my own clints to keep me going just want to make sure there is no harm in this as I know it may look strange that I go self employed and am still getting money from my fathers business.0 -
You need to look at the relationship between you and your father in terms of the business - forget that you are his son. Its your dad's responsibility to satisfy himslef that you are truely self employed when working for him - it does not matter how many other clients you have - its what you do for him which is relevent.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0
