John Lewis Sales Jobs - Anybody Had Any Luck?

I have just received yet ANOTHER rejection from an application I made to John Lewis for a Sales Assistant role. It seems to be very hard to get into such a big store. Has anybody else applied to them a few times, and been disappointed at being turned down again and again?

Truegho - firstly ignore the troll - don't even rise to the bait and give them the satisfaction that you are upset by their crass comments.
Re John Lewis - have you contacted them and asked for feedback as to why you didnt get the job? Have you ever got as far as the interview stage? They are not obliged to give you feedback but if you ask politely and say that you want to improve your job prospects in future then they are likely to give you feedback.
Have a look at other stores too e.g M&S, Selfridges, House of Fraser, Debenhams.
With places like John Lewis, I think you need to be persistent - I can remember applying for a job at my local University and I think that I applied for about 30 vacancies before I eventually got a job there so sometimes persistence pays off.
I hope that you manage to find a job soon - I know how demoralising it can be to be unemployed and get knockbacks because that was me until April this year.0 -
Hi Horace
Thank you for your reply to my post. It was both comforting and reassuring to know that you, like many other people here, understand my upset at that poster's comments. Yes, I will ignore him, and not let his shallow comments get to me.
Re. John Lewis, I did request feedback from them last time I applied. They subsequently rang me up to say that they only gave feedback to those who had been summoned for the assessment, which is a bit of a shame, as I would have liked to know why I wasn't even invited for interview. Maybe it's because I have had more office/admin experience than retail. I don't know. I'm only surmising.
Anyway, have applied to one or two other retail stores, but obviously I am not holding out too much hope, as they have probably got thousands more applying, and if most of those applicants have retail experience . . . well, it goes without saying in regard to presuming who'll have the better chance of an interview.
Anyway, I will try not to let the John Lewis rejection get me down too much, and will keep on applying here, there and everywhere.
Thank you for your kind advice.

Truegho - what area do you live in?
I know you have applied in the past for DWP vacancies, but are you in an area where they are recruiting for the A4E positions? They are advertising extensively on the JCP website, and if you look on A4E website it lists the areas that they are recruiting in.0 -

This is the nail on the head.
Asking other people if they've been rejected isn't going to change anything - it just gives you more negative emotions to throw around. You shouldn't be here for sympathy - but for help. Mysolicorisbetter, although quite blunt, makes a strong point.
There's one thing in common with these failed applications; You.
Now, that's not to say that you're not worthy of the job. With your 20 years experience you could probably do most jobs with your eyes closed. You probably don't sell yourself properly on your CV, or when it gets to interview stage you're losing points where others are gaining.
Everytime you get declined an interview, job, CV application, whatever, don't be afraid to call up the person who made the decision and ask them why. They'll appreicate that you are willing to learn, but vitally, you'll know exactly what stopped you getting the job.
But really, in my opinion, the way you come across is that you're just looking for sympathy from people in the same boat. If you do the same tomorow as you did today, you'll probably get the same result. Make a change.
tldr: Yeh, sorry, it's you. Ask why they rejected you, what the other applicants had that you didn't, look to act upon this for future.0 -

So Truegho, how can you differentiate yourself from the other candidates? What makes you right for the job?
This is what you need to focus on, not the negatives.Gone ... or have I?0 -
Truegho, not trying to be nasty, but do you act as despondant in interviews as you do on here? Nobody at an interview will want to see someone who just feels sorry for themselves.0

No, I most certainly do not. Period. On the contrary, I show EVERY enthusiasm and always give it my best shot. But then, it goes without saying, they probably have many, many other candidates who perform similarly, so they can take their pick, can't they?Truegho, not trying to be nasty, but do you act as despondant in interviews as you do on here?
