Ex Boyfriend left major debts

My ex left owing money to a few different companies which i knew nothing about.Have just tried to obtain a loan from bank who advised me of these problems.Have been informed debt is against property and that i am liable.How do i overcome this do i have to pay these debts getting rather worried about situation.

were the debts is joint names?
what do you men 'against property'...do you mean they were secure against your house?

I would anyway suggest you get copies of your credit reports to see precisely what they show,
