Stay near Pyramids?

Hi all

We are planning a trip to Egypt in a couple of weeks.

Just looking around for hotels atm.

Was wondering if anyone had any advice on whether or not to stay near the Pyramids.

Hotels are slightly cheaper but needs to be weighed against cost of transport to the city centre each day.

Would appreciate any tips from anyone here who has/hasnt stayed near the Pyramids and what their reasons/experiences were.

Thanks a ton :)

Taxis are cheap in Cairo so long as you know the correct fare. Ask at your hotel how much a cab to your destination costs. They will tell you a reasonable price - which will be more than the price an Egyptian pays - but not as much as a cab driver will try to get from you as a tourist. When you get to the destination, get out the cab and hand the driver the fare through his window - that gives the impression you are not a new arrival and makes it more difficult for him to try to start haggling. (You need to make sure you have the correct money as if they see a 50 note, say, and the fare should be 20, you will have any amount of trouble getting change.) The thing I always think about Egypt is that I am unlikely to be mugged in the conventional sense. The man "mugging" me is is smiling and shaking my hand, if you know what I mean.

Buses run from the centre out to Giza and they are even cheaper.

I think if I went again, I might stay out at the Pyramids as lots of the hotels there have pools/sunbathing areas where the ones in city don't unless they are top-end.

Where are you flying to in Egypt - there are several international airports and unless you are flying to Cairo you will have a journey of several hours to get anywhere near the Pyramids
