if you know nothing about stocks and shares then don't invest ... just put the money in a savings account until you learn something about them

Good idea! Firstly most people wouldnt recommend getting a bank/broker to invest on your behalf as their fees will be massive and at best they wont earn you more than 5%, in which case you might as well stick it in a fixed yr bond.

The whole fun with shares in choosing the company yourself and following the price, as a newbie stick to big company stocks like llyods, national grid, vodaphone (tho not necessarily these companies!) as theres less chance of huge short term price drops plus you will get 2 dividends per year.

Best online broker imo is iii (google it) and advn, lse.co.uk to observe stocks and do research. other sites will be more share tips, i find choosing the sector to invest in first then companies easier as it narrows it done.

    have fun!

In which case your best choice is an IFA. Tied agents only have their own product available and most cant pick the investments. They require you to pick them from their selection available. IFAs have whole of access and are required to pick the investments.

TD Waterhouse (watch out for management charges)
    Halifax Investments
Hargreaves Lansdowne (expensive for share buying though)

well that's rather different to your first post but ..

you need to open a share dealing a/c... there are lots of companies that let you do this.
    internet is the norm
    so
    most of the banks
    many building societies
plus some like i*trade; selftrade etc

    google 'share dealing'

they will charge for each deal i.e. if you buy or sell
for small deals typical prices is between £7 and £12 per deal plus a bit of tax on buying.
Once the account is set up you simply select which share you want to buy, either how much or how many and then go for it.

Where do you learn? I'm very much at the savings stage at the moment but I hope to progress on to investments one day!

OK, ive just been speaking to halifax. Im booked in at 2.30 on friday. Ive asked to see someone about opening an investment ISA. Think im going to go for the portfiolio. They charge between 1.05 - 1.5% for the annual charge. Does this sound good?

Please do not go to the Halifax for investments. In fact don't go near any bank!
