Will an old credit card account still be active?

Hi
I have a an old credit card account with halifax which is about 3 years old now. I have never used the card and don't even have the actuall credit card anymore. Will the account still be active with the halifax or would it have been closed down?
Thanks in advance

Just because you've not used the card doesn't mean the account would have been closed.

The best way to find out is to check your credit files. For help, see page 1 of the *How to obtain credit reports* sticky.

If closed, the account will be marked "settled" ;)

Some credit card companies don't automatically send out new cards to customers who have stopped using the cards, but they should write to you a few months before the expiry date to advise you that they intend to do this. If you haven't heard anything then the account is probably still live.

I am bit worried when you say that you don't have the card anymore. Where is it then? I hope you mean you cut it up and disposed of it? If you just lost it and didn't report it then anybody could have got hold of it and run up a huge debt in your name.

Sorry one more thing would it just be a case of calling Halifax and asking them to send me a new card?

Lenders' procedures vary, but if the account is still open, as seems likely, I expect they'll send you a replacement with a different account number, following some security checks.

Btw, if you ring Halifax Card Services on 01315 498050, you'll avoid the perishing 0870/0845 numbers ;)

This is quite a timely post.

I just today received a statement from the Halifax for a credit card I opened for Balance Transfer usage only, but have not used for 2 years, since I moved the balance.

This is the first statement I have had for about a year, or more, and I have not had a replacement card either.

If they had not sent the statement then I would have forgotten about it.

I guess your account is still open.
