eBay's needless tinkering

Does anyone else get annoyed at eBay's tinkering with the sub-categories?

Just when you get used to something, they strip out the sub catagory you like and you have to wade through the main catagory with pages and pages of stuff and you can never quite make a search that does the job quite as well.

I've just discovered that they've removed "leather and suede" for each chest size of the mens coats area. And I remember not so long ago they removed all the popular makes of mens jeans too. As a result you have a filter out swarms of fake Diesel if you want to make progress.

I've always liked sub catagories for a number of reasons:
- Less prone to junk like get rich quick schemes, xbox 360 etc
- Less nonsense titles like L@@k, NOT...
- The ability to do an "all new listings in the last XX days" without being swamped
- The satisfaction that you're in the right place

I appreciate that in fast changing areas like toys and electronics things need regular tinkering but mens coats? c'mon!

Comments

  • Some of the category changes are useful, mostly when new categories are added (e.g. men's kilts didn't have their own category until recently), but it makes no sense to get rid of popular categories. It may well be that eBay collect more listing fees if a few sellers finish up listing in 2 approximately matching categories rather than 1 more suitable one, but if customers have to wade through more spam then final value fees are likely to be lower overall, so eBay will lose out.
