Hi, I'm new and just after a bit of advice. I've had my light bulb moment and now really want to sort myself out. I had a date in mind to pay off my 1st cc but I've worked out its gonna take me longer so now i just feel demotivated thinking about how long it could all take, do you think its better to have an end date in mind to work towards or ignore this and just throw as much as you can at it until cleared. Its just upsetting to think how long things could take me.

Hi megan
I think we all have out own aims, I have a date in mind for debt freedom, but I also set myself mini targets (my next one is sub £15k/£20k cleared) and it feels great when I get to one of those. For me it really helps to have achieveable bite sized chunks but keeping the overall aim in mind so that I don't get too self congratulatory when I hit a mini target£34,547 (Dec 07); Current debt: £zilch (Debt free December 2010)

have you used the snowball calculator yet? that is quite motivating, especially if you start off by outting in minimum payments and then up to what you think you can pay, then shave more off your budget and see what impact that has - very addictive

I am new to all of this as well so my advice wont be amazing but…..I think it is good to have a rough date in your head so you have an ultimate goal, but I would focus more on the smaller more achievable goals that should help keep you motivated. You could also treat your self (nothing OTT mind) when you hit one of your mini goals. Another thing that might keep you motivated is to keep written reminders of why you want to be debt free all around your house so you can have a visual positive motivation boost. There are loads of good forums that I am sure can make it all seem a little less daunting.
It might seem a long way off but the sooner you start the sooner they will be paid off.
Good luck hun xMake £10 a day, October 2023 - £105/£3100 -
Hi Megan and welcome to the forum,
Have you completed a full SOA (Statement Of Accounts) yet?
www.makesenseofcards.com/soacalc.html
Also read the newbies guide near the top of the DFW board.
Once you complete and post your SOA we can better advise and support you!

Thanks all for replying. I've just started back at work after 9 months maternity so once I know exactly what my wage will be each month (returning to part-time hours) i'll post my SOA. I'm dreading it but feeling ALOT better after finding this forum. Good to know I can finally fess up and not be judged. Thanks again, hopefully I'll hear from you all more in the future.
