Am not happy , after 3 years of tidying up my credit report, i thought id go for this card, i have been using Vanquis and Capital One for the last 2 years, mainly to strengthen my credit rating, i thought these 2 being the worst cards you could get, Initial would accept me, i read it carefully who it suits, no ccj's , no arrears blah blah, none of which i have , spent a fortune on Experian and Equifax, i am currently in the fair section on both, 2 very minor defaults from few years back for around £30, BOTH settled in full. up to date on everything that is on there, only using 26% of the credit that is available to me, am a home owner, worse knock back was, i have been with Barclays 3+ years, steady full time job and them getting 1800 a month from me, i have 3k of savings in total with them, i was turned down online for this card, and now am totally annoyed i will have had a credit search applied knocking my rating down, for nothing. Phoned Barclays, spoke to a very unhelpful man who said id failed their security check of asking my name, age at next birthday and my middle name  and point blank refused to speak to me , said i can either wait 2 days for a call back or i could go into my local branch with 2 forms of ID and a pic, offered him my banking pass code but he didnt want to know. does anyone have any idea, suggestion as to why i was turned down for this poxy card as i am fuming i was daft enough to apply for it now!!!:mad::mad:

ps With Barclays, i have a cash card account, they gave me a debit card with that though, no over draft, have 2k in my account and almost 2k in their savers account. Am seriously thinking of closing it down

You won't know until you're able to speak with them. You don't mention if you're on the electoral role, time in current job, time at current address and time at current bank is 3 years (sometimes handy to keep an old account just for this question)?

One search won't make much difference.

If you've been building your credit rating for 2 years maybe it's time to think about a mainstream card?

I would not rely on the experian credit score because the lender have their own credit scoring methods. The problems is the defaults which will stay on your credit file for 6 years and will stop you from getting credit with a mainstream lender such as Barclays.

I had defaults and my account with HSBC was well maintained however they did not give me overdraft and credit card until the defaults fell off my credit file.

I also think that the fact that you have a cash card account and not a full account with them will not help your internal credit score with Barclays.

I think that you should carry on using vanquis and capital one until the defaults dropped off your credit file.
  • Hi, yes am on the electoral roll, have been in my new house 4 months now, but was in previous address for 4 years, also on electoral roll and registered there with Barclays, i thought if i couldnt get a high risk card i wouldnt get a main stream card either? there is 2 settled defaults, both have correction notices on them, even though i paid both, one for £29 from Littlewoods and a dispute with previous contract phone for £104, they both show as settled and an explaination of why there were there, so would it be best to apply for a current account card ?
  • pps ! time in current full time employment is 6 years, time with bank is 3 and a half years

The defaults will effect barclays as they are up the creak and choose hard now.
  • i think it will be your defaults one or two on here have tride to get the initial with defaults and be turned down me being one of them and take off the correction notices off from what they say on here it not good to have them on your credit file

There have been news reports around which PNPSUKNET has indicated (you can google for them) that explain that Barclaycard is in difficultly due to many people not paying back their credit card debts due to the increase in unemployment.

This means they are now declining lots of applicants.

At the moment they are phoning people that miss one payment, putting up people's APR if they aren't paying their debts off, moving payment dates around and they have removed any mention of personal loans from their website.

I suggest you get a full current account with Barclays , wait a year as then you would have had a current account with Barclays for over 4 years and then go for another mainstream card.

Do you know when the default will drop off? Having been with Barclays for 3 years does not mean you'll have access to a debit card, the default might a problem for them as well. Very unlikely you'll get mainstream CC until default off your file
