Paypal and why should i bother!!

I purchased a cd changer off ebay around a month ago. I had it professionally installed at a cost of £70. It didn't work so i emailed the seller and he said basically "tough"! So i started a complaint through paypal, it's been a really long winded process but finally tonight they found in my favour!

They have asked for me to send the item back, problem is it's gonna cost me £70 to get it un installed! Plus i think you have to send it special delivery? It is only the cable which is the problem so whats the chance of him only accepting the cd channger back and not the lead?

They also said i may not get a full refund even though on the auction page it states, that there was £500 buyer protection so why wouldn't i get a full refund??

Thanks in advance

I purchased a cd changer off ebay around a month ago. I had it professionally installed at a cost of £70.

I bet you won't do this in future, but I wouldn't buy something like this that needed installing at further cost in case it didn't work.

Recorded delivery would do, but why £70 to remove it, can't you do this yourself?
It is only the cable which is the problem so whats the chance of him only accepting the cd channger back and not the lead?

Can't you just get a new cable then?

For many reasons, but did you pay by Credit card or Visa Debit card, in which case you can claim off them if it doesn't work.

on watchdog recently the reported you could get away with send in a recorded parcel of anything back to the seller as all they check is that it has been signed for before releaseing money back.
You can always get a refund by doing a chargeback if you paid by credit card.
There is unlikely to be money in the sellers account if you paid more than 7 days ago. So paypal are unlikely to reclaim any money. But this just adds to your case for doing a credit card charge back.

  • So what is buyer protection then if all they do is try to claim the money that you have paid with? It isn't much protection and why would they only cover you up to £500? Surely it shouldn't matter how much it is if all it is, is your own money?

The cable has been run all through the dash, under the carpets and to the cd changer which has been sited in the boot. They think that the cable is fine but its the changer that is faulty. It said on the auction that it was in brilliant working order!! The cable was new as it said it had never been used.

I paid through debit card which is the last time i do that aswell.

  • i would try talking to the seller through the message service on ebay, nbe honest and reasonable, ask for a % refund back to purchase a new cable.

If you are stuggling there either call paypal on 08707 307 191

or ebay, by going to the US version - https://www.ebay.com

Then click on live help on the top right of the page (ensure you allow pop-ups for this site 1st) Using that you get live 1-2-1 help.

Worked for me with some queries.

  • I did think about a % refund due to it only being the changer that is faulty but of course i'd have to come to a reaonable amount agreeable between both of us and i don't know if he is all that reasonable!

  • So what is the buyer protection for via paypal? They don't protect you for anything!

i would suggest you either try to find out what the problem is and see if you can save the hassle and fix it yourself. It shouldnt be too hard to just uninstall the cd changer only and connect directly to your stereo without taking all the wiring out. If its only the wiring, it could be that the pro fixed it wrong( does happen) or they may be willing to replace the wiring for free if you purchase new ones.

I would avoid sending the item back to him. For one you will lose out on cost you occured in installation and secondly paypal wont refund your postage costs and finally there is no gurarantee he will accett the item from the postie so you will be wasting more money.

You could try doing a chargeback with your debit card, will need to speak to your bank to see if they do it (its not just cc that you can do chargebacks with).

Has anyone actually got away with a chargeback through their credit card, I did this in October for something I bought faulty in June last year, Paypal didn't want to know so charged back through CC, March this year, yes 4 months later Paypal restricted my account and said I had done an unauthorised chargeback through my card and wanted me to put the money back in, 6 weeks later and we are at stale mate but the money hasn't been put back in my account, the last the Paypal chap said to me is that is the account isn't used for 90 days it will be closed, so be it.

You could file a complaint with paypal stating that the item wasnt fit for the purpose. They will review it and you could get your money back through that.
