LoCost Healthy Crumble Topping - with wholegrain flour and NO Sugar - is it possible?

Anyone got any recipes for a low cost tasty healthy crumble topping that uses very little wholegrain flour, and NO sugar?

Is this even possible?

Not sure, I usually replace half the flour with oats though? Kinda healthier?

Yeah, I was thinking of adding oats. Not sure what to use instead of sugar though...

Well you can do a savoury crumble with no sugar can't you? Just it wouldn't taste sweet.

True - but then it won't hold together like 'proper' crumble, I think?

I think it would still stick together, as the crumble mix is really just a pastry made into crumbs. I would normally add the fat to the flour and oats and crumb, then stir in the sugar. Is the no sugar thing a dietary option - diabetic for instance then could you use splenda or similar - or is it cos you don't have any? If this is the case maybe put the crumble over the fruit etc and drizzle on some honey or syrup to add sweetness?

    It's only a game

    Hi,

I use 4 oz flour - any kind - 2 oz margarine (we use vegan) and then add equal the volume of oats. No sugar at all - its lovely and crunchy!

I've made crumble using low fat flora and powdered sweetener. Half fat to flour like shortcrust pasty it says you can't bake with it but seems OK. Just a big dollop of sweetner. A handful of porrige oats gives a nice texture too.

  • I would use oats with some mixed nuts added, an ounce of low fat spread and 2 tsps honey for sweetness

Since OH went diabetic we haven't had puddings, and I miss them so much !! Wanted ask if there was any kind of fruit crumble topping that I can do that is low on sugar and carbs ...? Am sure you can maybe do something on the lines of a flapjack thingy with porridge oats ? I am sick of the sight of sugar-free jelly :(

Hi, Whenever I make a crumble I always use porridge oats and granulated sweetner.
Usually work on the normal recipe of half fat to flour and add a couple of handfuls of oats and a little bit of sweetener (not too much as it can be bitter).
When doing apples for crumble you could add some cinnamon to the crumble mix and use less sweetener.
