Vaccinations/Malaria Tabs - Thailand

I wonder if anyone can help please.

My friend and I are going to Thailand (Bangkok for first 3 days and then the island of Koh Chang) for 12 days at Xmas).

We are both a bit confused as to whether we need vaccinations/malaria tabs for this trip. The Govt website says we don't, my friends doctor says we do, the pharmacist in Boots says we do, the pharmacist in Lloyds says we don't - hence why we are both confused

Do any of you have experience of going to this place and did you have vaccinations or have to take malaria tabs and if so, which tabs and which vaccines did you have ...... just to add to the confusion :D

Thanks for your help in advance.

OH and I went to Thailand on our honeymoon last year. We spent 3 days in Bangkok and 10 days on Ko Lanta in the south of the country.

We both had Hepatitis, Typhoid and a Tetnus/Diptheria/Polio booster before we left, but were advised that we didn't need malaria tablets as we were not going to the north of the country.

I'm not sure where Ko Chang is, so can only advise you of my own experience. We did take some good mosquito repellent though, which was very effective at preventing bites on the island.

I suggest your friend takes note of the advice given by her GP and you make an appointment with your own GP/practice nurse and do the same.

Vaccinations = mainly what you need for living here, but don't bother to get. So check, and update if needbe.

Malaria = minimal risk. Which to me, means no. I wouldn't take them. However, the official NHS map also says 'minimal risk'.

We can't really answer your question, since board rules forbid giving medical advice. I can only suggest that you visit the Health discussion board on the 'Thorn Tree' at www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree

My own experience: Thailand is a very clean and safe country, and the risks of malaria infection in the main tourist areas are minimal.

You won't be refused entry if you're not immunised against anything - it's completely up to you. I would recommend malaria tablets if your going outwith tourist areas but with your itinerary I wouldn't get anything.
