How long after incident can you claim?

About three months ago we had a disaster, one of the kids left the bathroom tap running as we were rushing out, when we got back a few hours later water was pouring through the kitchen ceiling. Since it was human error I didn't think anything of it. But a friend of mine came round yesterday and told me I could have claimed for it if I had accidental damage cover, which I do.

1) Is he correct?
2)Is it too late to claim?

The ceiling has a gaping hole, it's run through the light fitting, soaked into kitchen cabinets and made the tiles crack in the bathroom (the hardboard base just dissolved after a couple of weeks, it cracked when I stood on it!).

Any advice would be gratefully received!

Dave

It's escape of water not accidental damage. The policy requires that losses are notified as soon as possible after the event and sometimes give a time limit. I think that there's a good chance that the insurers will accept the claim although they would expect you to pay something towards it if the damage has become worse through your neglect. Give them a ring and ask them.

Thanks for the reply cogito. Phoned them today, as you stated, I would have been covered anyway, they were completely fine about thee delay, said my reason was valid and understandable. Thanks!
