Rome/Pompeii -child discounts without id?

There are considerable savings to be made on child tickets in Rome and Pompeii but they all seem to require evidence that the child is from the EU. I don't really want to have to carry my childrens' passports with me all day (especially as I keep reading about the number of pickpockets in these areas) - just wondered if anyone has managed to get the child tickets without showing any id?
