who do i contact

i work at a local matalan store and my hours include a hour after the shop is closed to help clean up. we are locked in the store and have to wait for my manager to unlock the doors. recently we have been let out the shop later and later up to 20 mins after our finishing time. we are not paid for the extra 20 mins we worked which adds up to jsut under £200 a year for weekend staff and just under £500 a year for weekday staff of unpaid work. the company has ignored our complaints and we have no union that i know of. ive been looking for work so i can quit this current unpaided one but have failed to be employed so far i cant afford to quit

who do i go to about this problem as that extra money we owed make a huge difference for many of us

The problem is not that you are not being paid, it is that you are being illegally detained in your own time. Does the manager stay outside or is he in the building with you?

so you work right up to the last second before the manager lets you out.
    (I would think probably not)
    Actually
working an extra 20 minutes or are you just waiting around to be let out.

You are very unlikely to get paid for any extra than your contracted hours.

I think the best you can insist on is to be 'let out' at your contracted shift end .
Hassle them and hassle them so that they dont ignore you.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

the manager stay in the building with us. the problem is both the fact we not being paid as it alot of money and we being held in during our own time as many of the younger member of staff rely on lift home from parents

As a group, you must confront the manager and insist on being let out at the right time. And as a group, once the minute arrives, insist that whatever he is doing, he comes to open the doors. As a group, find him and wait by him, don't wait by the doors and don't go to the doors if he tells you to go, tell him to lead the way. It is tough and you all have to stick together, because I suspect he is going to get upset if you do it alone.

Once again, this not about pay. It is about freedom to leave the premises

Has anyone else worked in retail and had to "clean up" after the shop is closed. i.e. if the store closes at 5:30 and you do a 8:30am-5:30pm shift, you're expected to stay in the store until the last customer has left, then take up your tills etc... I thought that was common retail practice that has been happening for years (with no extra pay after your 5:30)
