Just a heads up to everyone who may have missed (as I did) the news that it is now fully legal to display number plates which have either the Union flag, Cross of St George, Saltire or Red Dragon of Wales: as well one of the following identifiers: GREAT BRITAIN, Great Britain, GB, UNITED KINGDOM, United Kingdom, UK, CYMRU, Cymru, CYM, Cym, ENGLAND, England, ENG, Eng, SCOTLAND, Scotland, SCO, Sco, WALES or Wales.

In 2001 it was promised they would be made legal but they never were. Many drivers used them illegally without knowing and some were even fined.

Why would you want to do that?
If you are in the country then they are a waste of time, and if you are in another then you are singling yourself out.

Yeah, try telling an American his country sucks
  • When I got my car I ordered a new set of plates without any GB, Eng. Etc. Etc. on it as I think it spoilt the look of the car.

I'm sure this will be deemed as racist and stopped very quickly.

Are these English/Scottish/Welsh ones valid for travelling in Europe the same as the GB ones are?

The big advantage of displaying the GB + Euro symbol is not having to put a massive white GB sticker on the back of your car when you go abroad.

    No.
you must display the euro symbol and the national identification letters of the member state for it to be acceptable as a replacement for the GB sticker.

No. You need GB/Euro plates or a GB sticker.
