i just bought an ipod touch (very impressed with it) last week, after a week of looking for the best price i came to the conclusion they are all about the same, what you need to look for is what they are bundling with it. hmv were adding a set of mini spreakers currys were adding a hard case and a mains recharger, which i went for as a charger by its self can by quiet costly.

ipod touch - probably going to be updated in september/october at which point the cost of 16gb will either decrease (possibly with stock clearances for the current model withou the mooted updates) or you'll be able to get more for the current price if you see what i mean.

iphone - if you're talking about buying a new one then going through something like carphone warehouse via quidco for the cashback might do you right, but it isn't like you're ever going to find big pricewars over the cost of an iphone at the moment as its either O2 or suffer.
