Judderman's iMac support thread

that'd be support sought by me Lol

well some of you, especially MartyJ, may recall me talking some months ago about making the move to a Mac. well last Friday I went out and bought the iMac - 24 inch screen.

so hope some of you helpful types don't mind me asking the odd (OK maybe quite a few) questions on here whilst I am in my infancy of mac ownership ? All help of course greatly appreciated :beer:

So I immeadiately forgot 1st couple of things I wanted to ask - OK just found one. Safari seems to spell check on the fly. When a word is squigly red underlined how do I bring up a list of suggested spelling corrections please ?

Thanks

Judds

You need to right-click on the misspelt word. Or, if you have right-clicking turned off (System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Mouse), hold down ctrl and click on it.

Another cool little dictionary trick is if you hold down ctrl-cmd-d, it'll give you the definition of whatever word you mouse over. You can also look up words in Wikipedia by opening a word in the dictionary and then clicking the Wikipedia tab.

cmd-click works for me. Go to Safari > Preferences > General, and make sure "Open links from Applications" is set to "In a new tab in the current window".

Also, if you go into the mouse preferences (System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Mouse) and change the scroll ball to "Button 3", you can click a link with the scroll ball, and it'll open it in a new tab.

If you're using Safari, you might be interested in Safari AdBlock.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

    thanks Marty

how do I check if right clicking is on ? Both buttons have "primary button" selected from the drop down menu - should the right one be secondary button ? - I see no mention of right clicking anywhere in the mouse prefs screen :(

ah yes ctrl+ click works thanks - doubtless I'll forget this in 10 seconds :(

I have taken a lot of books out of library so hopefully they will help too. I'm guessing though after 10 years of PC ownership it's gonna take me quite some time to get used to the new ways of doing stuff.

I don't have a general section in my system prefs Mart :( - ah my bad was looking in the whole computers prefs not safari's , found that now and done that - will test in a second.

Does adblock slow the system any or have any downside of any sort ?

Thanks for all that and for offer of further help.

Yes, the secondary button refers to right clicking.

Yeah, it takes a little while to get used to, but you'll get there. You'll be trying to close windows in Windows by clicking in the top left corner soon. :p

It just stops Safari from loading ads; if anything, it'll make web-browsing faster as ads can take longer to download than the rest of the page. Once in a blue moon it'll block something you don't want it to block, but it adds a button to Safari to enable/disable it, so turning it off for a second isn't a problem.
Thanks for all that and for offer of further help.

    You're welcome! :)

Use the iDVD that comes bundled with the machine. It's a superb piece of software. If you want to edit the movie you are burning in any way then use iMovie first, then export it to iDVD for burning. Apple have lots of tutorials on their website. There are also some good books on using the iMovie/iDVD/Garageband/iPhoto suite.

If for any reason you have movies that aren't in the right format then ffmpegx will do a grand job of converting them.

thanks for that can idvd convert formats itself ? or do I need to use the other one you mentioned ?

have heard of one called handbrake - does that do what I need - had a very quick look other day and it talked about outputting to diff formats but I saw nothing saying it could accept various and output ts files - though, as i said, i did only have a quick read

it's as much that that I am looking for - with dvdflick (superd prog) you could chuck in an mpeg, a wmv and avi anything and mixed files even - so say one of each of afore mentioned and it would convert and spit out ts files ready to burn - also allowed you to put chapter stops as often as you wanted - truly fab piece of software

I'd say MacRumors is the best, but there's a lot of good ones out there.

The official Apple discussion forums are a good place to start.

ffmpegX will convert pretty much anything to anything.

iMovie and iDVD are also surprisingly powerful consumer-level tools for working with video.
