Holiday Curtailment - insurance

To cut a very long story short, my daughter and her friend flew out to Kos and my daughter showed up on the thermal imaging camera at the airport as having a 'warm face'. They were taken from the airport straight to a hospital and put in isolation for 4 days as suspected of having swine flu. Test were done and neither has swine flu, my daughter has hay fever!

There was an article in the Telegraph yesterday that says “customers who are quarantined on their trip can make a curtailment claim if they are placed in compulsory quarantine for more than 48 hours.” so we're now looking to make a claim on their insurance.

Can anyone tell me how insurance companies work out how much can be claimed? I think that we will only be able to claim back the cost of the missed nights in their accomadation and maybe the taxi fare to their resort after they were (finally!) released. But, they are on a 'package' holiday and so we don't have a breakdown of costs, flights, transfers, room etc. How can we work out what would be a reasonable amount to claim?

Have you looked at the T & Cs of the insurance as to whether it says
swine flu or suspected swine flu is or isnt covered.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

For compensation purposes, package holiday are normally broken down as 60% for the flights and 40% for accommodation.

Yes, they are covered - insurance company have been involved since they were taken to the hospital and have been really good with us.

Thanks Wammer - that gives us a starting point for the claim.

If theyve been good, why not give them a plug here then?

because they haven't paid our claim yet....

Ok, Insure and Go - the girls have their 'Gold' insurance.

So far they have been very reassuring and helpfu and even phoned me back after a few hours on the first day the girls were in isolation to see if I was ok...... I admit to being a gibbering wreck when I first called them.... lol

I probably should add that we took the insurance out a few weeks ago and it is over a week since all this happened, so things might be different for new policies - I don't know.....

Curtailment Cover is for when your holiday is curtailed eg you come home early due to illness etc.

I doubt the curtailment section will cover you in this case, there is a section of the policy that pays a nominal amount eg about £35 a day whilst you are hospitilised to help with taxi fares etc

The info below is taken from the Telegraph's website - I thought this meant they could claim if their holiday was cut short, which it was, by 4 days at the start......

    I am held in quarantine?

    <snip>

AXA, one of the biggest underwriters, says that “customers who are quarantined on their trip can make a curtailment claim if they are placed in compulsory quarantine for more than 48 hours.”

What would happen to people not quarantined in hospital? I've read about quite a few who have been quarantined in their hotels etc...... Presumably they wouldn't be able to claim anything then?
