Do traffic cops have to pull you over?
Hi All.
Yesterday I was on the way to a funeral. No excuse really.
I went along a road doing 30mph, went through a camera doing 30mph (good law abiding citizen so far).
I came over the crest of a hill to see a static van in the inside lane, I never hog the middle lane, (it is a 3 carrige road and only 30mph). Anyway a car was coming up on the outside and I was going to be boxed, so I gave a slight jag of the accelerator, came onto the middle lane then went to slow down again so I was momentarilly over the limit. Right in front of me was a traffic car with the radar gun on the top.
He pulled out (in front of me) and pulled-in the whitevan man (a different one) that was going fast in front of me.
I'm worried I may get some points from his gun (the ones on the roof of traffic cops' BMW's).
Do traffic cops have to pull you in at the scene or can thteyt retrospectively fine you? I've found lots of refernces on how to avoid fines but to be honest none clarify this scenario. PS I'll accept the penalty if I'm ticketted.
I'm just curious
PPS this is Scotland so the law may be different.
Regards

As far as I am aware they cannot send you a NIP without pulling you over it is only the scameras that can do that.2009 wins: Cadburys Chocolate Pack x 6, Sally Hansen Hand cream, Ipod nano! mothers day meal at Toby Carvery! :j :j :j :j0

If they have adequate proof they can if they want. Very unlikely too though.
Sounds like they decided the white van man decided more to be punished than you and chose him.0 -
It would be normal for the police to stop you for speeding, but technically they do not have to. The officer would have all the evidence he needs and would merely issue an S172 againist the registered keeper and issue an NIP to the driver.
But as you went only very briefly over and slowed back down I seriously doubt you'll hear anything at all.0 -

The fixed "gun" sounds more likely to be an ANPR device, Automatic number plate reader, which is linked to various databases, including insurance, car tax and also flags up suspect vehicles/owners etc. So I should think you will be ok.0 -
The device you are talking about is the infra red unit which is linked to the ANPR camera, they are all roof mounted. There are no roof mounted radar/laser speed guns. We have them on our BMW's, Volvos and Vectra estates.0
