Hi was hoping that someone out there would be able to help me!!

Right here goes i got a loan out from Abbey in February i can't remember the exact amount but i was paying back £227.20 over a long period of time. Which i quickly discovered i couldn't afford every month along with paying other things off as well. So i go a loan with my boyfriend to pay everything off. I requested a settlement Figure from Abbey which they sent out and give me a figure of £7,661.49. The settlement figure they gave me was valid until 3rd June.

I rang up in May and asked to pay my loan off they took off me £7,434.29 and said that one further payment of £227.20 would be required from my self on the date my usual payment would be. That was fine by me as that is Abbey's protocol.

So they took the £227.20 on the 24th May and i assumed that was it and they asked me to cancel my direct debit which i had done.

About three weeks later i hadn't received a letter to say the loan had been closed, so i rang up and asked someone what was going on to which she replied yes you have made your last payment and the loan is in the process of being closed.

Now have been with Abbey since i was 15 i know how slow they are so i just waited for the letter to come out.

Well Yesterday i go a letter from Abbey nearly a two months later saying that i owe them a further £227.20.

So i rang them up and asked why and they said because my preferred payment date was the 24th (My Pay day) and i took the loan out on the 26/02/09 and the loan repayments are due one month after the date your loan opens! (No one told me)

So now i have to wait 24hrs for them to get back to according the fella from the complaints dept. Even though 3 people told me i only had to make one more payment, and i paid what it said on the settlement figure and they waited nearly two months to tell me this!

I have said im not going to pay it Can they make please can someone help me. I know £227.20 doesn’t sound like a lot for most people but it is to me!

Contact them by phone - ask to speak to the Legal and Compliance manager - and say that you "wish to make a formal complaint which you expect them to handle within the FSA guidelines for complaint handling and treating customers fairly"

Tell them you are "prepared to take the matter to the Financial Ombudsman service unless the complaint is resolved satisfactorily"

If you use the jargon above they know where you are coming from and that this is a serious issue that they need to deal with within 24 hours.

You should receive confirmation that your account will be closed and confirmed to you in writing.
