Insect Repellant - what really works please

Hi - My DH gets bitten really badly and reacts terribly to mosi bites or any other insect bite, he fishes alot and needs a really good type of repellent.
Can anyone recommend a good repellent please - we are more than willing to try homemade remedies aswell as shop bought ones.
Thanks - Helen

We had a week up in the North West of Scotland in the mozzie season last year. I'd read about Avon Skin So Soft, apparently a lot of soldiers in the armed forces swear by it.

I tried it, my wife has very sensitive skin so she will not use anything she hasn't tried before. We didn't see a mozzie all week (we were staying by the sea which apparently they don't like).

On the last day we went for a walk along the shore of an inland Loch...

I can say that the Avon stuff worked for me - the wife was bitten to pieces and I only got a couple.

    I bought it from Ebay.

Obviously I can't guarantee it will work but it's worth a try!

Hi I react very badly to mosie bites too, and was recommended to take Vitamin B(benerva) tablets by a Boots pharmacist. Have been abroad lots since and have been bitten only a couple of times and have had nowhere near the reaction I used to. I use standard repellent too, most recently Autan but the tablets do the trick for me.

  • I've heard about the Skin so Soft thing too but never tried it myself. I always use the Jungle Formula - you can get it from Boots and has aways worked well for me :)

the best one that i have found is wilkinsons own brand spray, wipes and pump action sprays they are about £1.99 each and i only got bitten once in the 17 nights i was in jamaica this year and that was on the one bit i forgot to spray - my toes lol.

i have used this the last few years and its awsome and trust me i have come home from holiday on several occaisions looking like a victim of chicken pox as had so many bites
