Wanna buy a Blu Ray Player

The wife and I want a Blu Ray player, and I assumed they would not play normal DVD's. However I have just done a quick search and find that they do.
I have an HD TV, and a Sky HD box coming soon(been waiting 6 weeks), so any suggestions on a decent player would be gratefully received.

I was told by someone in an electrical store (he wasn't trying to sell me anything) that for the money you are far better going for the PS3 if you would ever use it for any of it's other functions.
I have to agree with pianeet that with some films it's difficult to tell the difference, but with others it makes a huge difference. The first Blue Ray film I bough was Happy Feet, and it was so clear that I think my son thought he was actually there.0 -
Buy a PS3.
Its got an internet connection allowing the blu-ray player to be updated.
Something that a lot of low to medium end blu-ray players cant do and for a similar price.
If you have a good tv set the difference is amazing and it will also upscale your original dvd collection also.
Transformers is a great film to showcase why blu-ray is si much better than DVD.
However there are som blu-ray titles that dont do it justice like the recently released The Wrestler which looked horrible.
These are very much the minority though.0 -
I'd recommend the one I have - panasonic DMP BD30 - recommended (& best buy) on 'Which?' Just checked and is still top best buy although costs from around £212 (amazon.)
It still plays normal dvds's and replays from point DVD is stopped (some don't), is easy to use and has minimal delay times (only when switching on)
Have had it for about a year with no problems.
ps - watch out for the sony's - one of them had problems with long delays and if i remember the review correctly, didn't start the dvd from the same place when it is stopped - although could be different now on different models.
Which has some good advice/features to look out for etc. if you need more info.
Hope this helps.0 -

The system update is a good point that I hadn't thought of. :T0
