Abbey rip-off £20 charge for mortgage statement not received!

I am sooo angry! Just called Abbey to chase up missing mortgage statement to be told that I will have to pay £20 for the privilege of receiving MY statement!! As we had some endowments maturing last year I am eager to check the statement but last year's was dated March so I waited until the second week after the end of March to allow Abbey time to send out the statements before chasing them up. However, I have been informed that last year they were late and that customers had until the end of March to chase up missing statements this year and I have missed the deadline!
I have, of course, requested a copy of their formal complaints procedure but we are unfortunately tied into a 3 year discount deal until May 2007 otherwise we would just move our mortgage now! Any suggestions?

Ask them to prove they sent it to you. If they can't then why should you pay the £20. If they can then i guess you would have to pay it and then claim it back off the post office.0

Thanks TangentMan. Spoke to their complaints department and thankfully a very helpful and efficient woman applied some common sense to the situation and resolved the matter, albeit that she had to do so in a rather convoluted way. The £20 charge will be added to our next direct debit but the complaints dept. will send me a cheque for £20! Apparently, the customer relations dept had already instigated the formal complaints procedure advising me of my right to take my complaint to the financial ombudsman! Is it me?!TangentMan wrote:Ask them to prove they sent it to you. If they can't then why should you pay the £20. Just make sure they don't add the £20 to your mortgage and charge you interest for the period until you pay the cheque they send you back into your own account.... :rolleyes:Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0
